CHAMPIONS OF DIVERSITY

2008 CHAMPIONS

Interact/Able Club and Mary Beth Berry - For the creation of the Interact/Able Club of North Hunterdon High school. For over 10 years, Mrs. Berry has been instilling a lifelong love of volunteering in the students. Whole-group activities include blood drives and helping the Special Olympics. This group has accomplished so much for the NHHS and surrounding community while breaking down walls that exist between special-needs and mainstream students.

Hunterdon Hispanos – For Kelly Ospina and Judith Buday for establishing the Hunterdon Hispanos. The organization’s mission is to help the Hispanic community integrate better in the county. Their most successful endeavor has been the monthly La Voz de Hunterdon, which is the only locally produced Spanish language newsletter.

Flemington Presbyterian Church, the Flemington Jewish Community Center, - It was a multicultural group consisting of leaders and members of both the congregations who have been working together since August 2006 to assist the Eissa family settle in Flemington. Brought to the US by the Lutheran Social Ministries from the Darfur region of The Sudan, this family of three brothers, a wife, and two (now three) children, are now being integrated into the social fabric of the county.

Calvary Episcopal Church, Living Waters Lutheran Church, Flemington Baptist Church, and the Sincerely, Henry Foundation. The Bienvenu Rwagasore family (10 strong) came to the US from the Democratic Republic of the Congo after escaping death and destruction that the Tutsi and Hutu groups are imposing on the country. Since March 2007, these congregations and the foundation have combined to sponsor and settle the family in Flemington.

Julie Bell - Julie Bell is the District Director of School Age Child Care for the YMCA and vice-president of the Raritan-Flemington District Board of Education. Through her efforts, the YMCA has been able to provide a before and after school program designed for children whose parents work. The students who have benefited most from the program are from Hispanic families who live in the apartments in Flemington. Notably, she organized the assistance to 21 residents of Hunterdon Hills, whose apartments and possessions were recently destroyed by fire.
